A Bright Future

The future of the new wing is looking bright: the windows are in and lighting is being installed in the new rooms! We're enjoying the view from one of the new science labs (pictured above) and wanted to use this blog post to show you some of the new wing's details that aren't visible from outside the building.

New arches have been constructed throughout hallways that connect the existing building to the addition.

A new building entryway for students will be spacious and airy due to its curved ceiling, pictured above. The arches and curved ceiling are inspired by architecture in Siena, Italy.

I know the new wing is fun to look at, but try not to stair. An elevator will be installed soon, but the new staircase has already been constructed! Our school colors will be added to the stairs and railings to give the stairwell a finished look.

In the Interest of *Transparency*: New Windows (and more videos)

Glass installation has begun and is really helping to make our vision of the new wing come together! Our construction crew poured the new sidewalk this week, and they are prepping the exterior walls for more finishes.

As promised, here are a few more 360° videos to give you a sneak peek at our new space.

Speaking of 360° -- why did the triangle hate speaking to the circle? Because it was pointless. Look out folks, I've heard that math-related humor is one of the first sines of madness. I better refrain from telling any more jokes in this post so that our new windows don't crack up...

Around and Around We Go: 360° Video Post!

We hope you all had a great 4th of July! After returning from the holiday, we were able to take a few 360° videos inside the new wing. In this first video post, we're focusing in on some of the updates made to Siena's lower level.

By the way, do you know why there are no knock-knock jokes about Independence Day? Because freedom rings.

Video 1: Theater/Music Room

Here's brief look around the future theater. The elevated part of the room will be our new music room and will convert into a stage for performances.

Video 2: Gallery Space

Across from the theater, we will have a brand-new gallery space. This area will highlight the amazing artistic talents of our students!

Video 3: Locker Rooms

The video above is a quick look at one of our future locker rooms. These spaces will get a ton of use for P.E. classes and after school athletics. The soccer team is looking forward to kicking off the season and the cross-country team knows these locker rooms will help them start off on the right foot.

Video 4: Hallway/Offices

Some of the existing lower level has changed as well. In this video, you can see how the space has been reconfigured into a new hallway and staff offices.

Stay tuned for more videos next week!

What's Black and White and Being Built Right Now?

School has been out for two weeks, and we've made a ton of progress on the new wing! Yesterday, our construction crew began to apply a facade to some of the external walls. If you look closely, you can see the beginning of our new black and white striped accent wall.

By the way, what's black and white and green and black and white? Two zebras fighting over a pickle! (Okay, maybe not our best joke, but we're a little rusty)

Since the students headed out on summer break, we've been amazed at some of the changes going on inside the building. Our old rooms 5 and 6 are no more! Demolition began after graduation, and some new walls have started going up to divide the space into its future layout.

Walls also came down in the Piazza to open the room up to the addition -- we can't wait to move into the new space. While we're on the topic of do you organize a party in outer space? You planet!

"Design Like a Girl" Program Visits Siena's New Wing

With spring upon us, it's time to get all our ducts in a row!  HVAC components and ductwork are being added throughout the addition.  We are getting closer and closer to glass installation, so the external appearance of the new wing will begin to look finalized soon.  Here's a shot of the construction site as of Friday morning:

In other news, the AIA D.C. Design Like a Girl Mentor Program recently incorporated Siena into one of its workshops!

On March 3rd, 2017, the DLAG Program focused on engineering and construction.  They began the day nearby at the Argyle Recreation Center and completed a series of hands-on exercises exploring structural design principals.  In the afternoon, they took an hour-long tour of The Siena School's new wing!  They were shown around by professional engineers and architects who helped them identify structural elements on site.

Even under construction, Siena's new wing is a place of learning!  We were thrilled to be able to be a part of this great program that encourages young women to explore a career in architecture.

Journey to the Center of the New Wing

This week, we thought we'd take you on a field trip to see some of the areas of Siena's new wing that aren't so readily visible from our parking lot.

Here's a snapshot of our faculty and staff checking out the forthcoming theater and music room on the ground floor.

A few of us made our way to the top level of the addition. I'd call it a balcony, but that would be a porch choice of words. This level will eventually be the home of our new science labs.

Here's another view of the science lab level. The walls will go up soon, but we're enjoying the panoramic view for now!

I have a Star Wars trivia question for you: what was Darth Vader's lesser-known second wife's name?  Ella!  Ella Vader.

Speaking of addition to getting the walls ready, our construction crew is working on the area where our new elevator will be.  Seeing the progress on this really lifts our spirits.

And just for fun, here's a night view of the new wing. We are delighted at how everything is coming along!

*Steeling* a Glimpse

This week, we were thinking inside the box: we had the opportunity to peek inside the new wing to check in on how the black box theater is coming along!

The image above shows the area that will become the theater.

The raised level will house our new sound-proof music room. It's coming along nicely!

Meanwhile, the work continues outside...

Welding is a joint effort at Siena -- it takes a crew to weld beams of this size and quantity!

By the way, why do welders' arguments never end?  They can't stop making the sparks fly.

We're *Beaming* With Pride

We're proud to share that while we were away on winter break, our construction crew made some incredible progress!

Here's a look at the steps that led to these amazing developments:

Just before break, our construction crew focused on our new wing's future windows.

There won't be too many jokes about this; window puns just seem terribly transparent.

Window wells were added to keep dirt from entering through the window openings during backfilling.

Once backfilling was completed, steel work began. This was done when school was not in session so that the heavy beams could be unloaded in the parking lot (as shown in this post's first photo).

We're grateful to our construction crew for putting in a ton of work over the past few weeks!
